Artists: Jane Wafer
Jane Wafer first studied biology before turning to art as an alternative way to engage with the world. Her work is very varied but 3D sculpture forms a major part of her practise and bears witness to a continuing fascination with the natural world. This September she took part in the Pestival at the Southbank Centre in London. This science-art collaboration was a perfect stage for one of her recent works, the 'Not-Doings'. These large organic forms were a result of reflections on change and transformation and took their inspiration directly from the lives of insects, the most diverse and successful animals on our planet.
In her latest work, 'We Can Fix It', Jane uses industrial and domestic materials in an endeavour to 'fix' dead trees. It is an absurdly painstaking attempt to breath life into their rigid branches. The construction of animal-like joints and spines enables them to twist and turn, introducing energy and flexibility.
