About us
| The Workshop Studio is a fine art studio complex and gallery space in St Mary’s Rd, east Oxford, UK. We are a small group of artists at various stages of our careers whose work includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, video, photography, performance and installation. The Workshop Studio strives to build networks with other studio groups, locally and internationally. We exhibit together both here and abroad and organize events for the local community such as film screenings, seminars and practical workshops. NUMBER 38 is the space where we will mount exhibitions, run courses, hold screenings, seminars and other events. It has good natural light on the first floor of the Victorian workshop building. The space is equipped with easels and drawing boards. An exhibition programme as well as a series of courses for 2008 is being planned - see our Teaching page for further info. This is an exciting new initiative for The Workshop Studio. Our first event in Number 38 was a screening in April 2008 of video works by five emerging artists from London and Beirut. HUNGRY EYES showed eight new works that were challenging in both content and format and explored the relationship between the artist and the audience. It was curated by artist/curator Tom Robinson. See our events page. We hold an annual open studio event. At our 2007 Open Studio weekend in June, more than three hundred people visited us during the week-end and enjoyed an opportunity to meet the artists, talk to them about their work and to buy selected works. We received a lot of interesting and positive feedback about our work and the studios. We plan to hold our next open studio the weekend of 28th/29th June 2008. At the start of 2007 we were pleased to welcome Mohamed Bushara to the studios as our first Artist in Residence. Mohamed worked here in a guest studio for most of last year and we really enjoyed working alongside him and sharing ideas about practice with him. In 2006 we hosted the first of what we hope will be a series of annual exhibitions by invited artists. Curated by artist Tom Robinson, the exhibition of drawings and paintings by Frances Crombie showed works made over a period of seventy five years. We were delighted to honour her with this small exhibtion and are grateful to Tom for his input.
